Winnipeg police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year.
Police said on Sunday that they found a woman dead inside an apartment shortly after midnight at 611 Jefferson Ave. in the city's West Kildonan neighbourhood.
A police spokesperson said the woman had suffered injuries to her upper body and died.
A 61-year-old man was taken into custody for questioning by homicide investigators. He is believed to be the victim's husband.
No charges have been laid and police have not yet identified the victim or any suspects.
Winnipeg police are investigating the city's first homicide of the year.
Police were called to the Garden Towers apartment building at 611 Jefferson Ave. regarding an injured woman just after midnight Sunday, and found a 59-year-old woman suffering serious trauma to her upper body. She has since been pronounced deceased.
A 61-year-old man has been taken into custody and is facing a charge of second-degree murder.
The homicide unit is investigating the incident. Police remained at the West Kildonan scene Sunday afternoon.
This year marked the first in a long time where there no homicides were reported in Winnipeg before March 1 and might be the longest the city has gone before recording the year's first homicide, although no records are kept on that.
By this time in 2009, six people had been slain.
In recent years Winnipeg has averaged 24 homicides a year, with higher totals — 27 to 29 — in the last three.

A 61-year-old man is charged with second-degree murder in the death of a 59-year-old woman.
Officials wheeled a stretcher into the Garden Towers apartment building on the 600 block of Jefferson Avenue at Teakwood Avenue this morning, where police say a woman was killed just after midnight.
The victim suffered serious upper body trauma, Winnipeg police say.
One resident of the six-storey building said she didn't hear anything unusual last night.

Husband arrested in city's first homicide of the year
A 61-year-old man is facing second-degree murder charges in connection to his wife's death early Sunday morning -- Winnipeg's first homicide of the year.
Police say the 59-year-old woman died from serious head trauma after being beaten with a household item in the apartment the couple shared on Jefferson Avenue. Winnipeg police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen would not say what the item was, only that it's something not commonly used as a weapon.
The suspect called 911 shortly after the assault, telling dispatchers he'd hurt his wife. Police would not release his name or the name of the victim; however, Canwest News Service reported Mike Kapsik is charged with the murder of his wife, Ludmila Kapsik.
They had lived in suite 112 for several years.
The city's first homicide this year occurred surprisingly late in the year. At this time last year, there were already five murders, said Michalyshen.
Stewart Shaw, 19, was listening to music and surfing the Internet just before midnight Saturday when he heard loud banging in the suite below. He could feel the thumping through the floor.
"I thought at first it could be someone moving furniture or someone dropped something," he said. "The loud banging went on for about 15 seconds."
Other residents of the six-storey cinder-block apartment building in the 600 block of Jefferson Avenue said they didn't hear a peep overnight and didn't know the couple.
Police said the couple had been married for decades but had no children.
They are originally from the Czech Republic, moving to Canada years ago.
Michalyshen said police had no record of domestic violence in the home and no history with the husband.
But he said it's not uncommon for domestic abuse to go unreported.
"The motive for this is something we still need to sift through and sort out," said Michalyshen.
The woman's body was removed from the first floor apartment late Sunday morning.
By mid-morning, police appeared to be wrapping up their investigation at the scene.
The identification unit was still on scene with two police cruisers and yellow police tap blocked the first floor in the building's east wing.
